Chinese poetry ideogram

Chinese characters always look intrinsically poetic to occidental eyes. Particularly when we see calligraphy in action. That this character should combine word and temple sets the imagination wandering, but without a proper understanding of the etymology of Chinese ideograms we might draw false conclusions. Suspicions grow when we consider that our own language lacks a satisfactory definition of the word, and almost certainly is incapable of giving one. It struggles even with a verb: Poetise first used by Sidney in 1581 in an apology for poetrie remains as ugly today, as the day it was coined.
